Sounding not from one place (belying the band’s strong Florida roots), and instead sounding like they were from everywhere enabled them to connect with rednecks and hippies, East coast attitude and West coast shine. Let’s rewind and take a listen to the band that has best represented American Rock music for 40 years – a deserved title for Petty and the Heartbreakers. I play some music that started its life on acoustic, but probably a LOT more that came into the world on electric, but the songs hold up regardless. In the two-plus years since Tom Petty’s passing, his music rings true as ever, and sounds just as it was meant to be -timeless. ![]() But it sounds FANTASTIC on acoustic - he’s got a bunch like that. And most well written songs do… Someone above mentioned “Refugee” by Tom Petty - a heavily electric song if there ever was one. If I record them, I might play some electric lead with the acoustic rhythm on some of them, but the basic song has to come off with an acoustic. But I play a ton of songs by the artists above acoustically. Brown Sugar and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking come to mind, so does Purple Haze. There are some that just rely very heavily on a great electric riff that don’t translate as well. To me, there aren’t that many songs that I consider great songs that don’t hold up well on acoustic.
